TV: Squid Game

Netflix's newest Korean Drama, Squid Game, has taken the internet by storm. The show revolves around a competition of simple child-like games with a dire penalty if you lose. The show's soundtrack has made its way onto TikTok, becoming a trend that thousands of users are participating in.

TV pt.2: YOU

Season 3 of You has premiered on Netflix, and if you were as infatuated with the twisted mind of Joe Goldberg as I was in Seasons 1 and 2, just wait until you watch Season 3. Love and Joe have settled down in suburbia with their new baby claiming to have changed their ways...but will anything actually change?

Halloween: Harry Styles edition

One of our favorite looks from Halloweekend 2021 was when Harry Styles dressed up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. He debuted this look during "Harryween," the Halloween show on his tour. Nobody rocks a ruby slipper quite like Mr. Styles.

Film: Dune

Dune––with a powerful soundtrack from Hans Zimmer––came out in theaters and aired on HBO Max last week. If you are in a mood to see Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet on the big screen, this is the film for you.

Music: Adele, "Easy on Me"

In mid-October, Adele released her first single in 5 years, "Easy on Me." It was everything I hoped for and more. (It was the soundtrack to a few tears shed on my bed, wrapped up in a blanket.) If this was a glimpse into her November album, 30, we all should start preparing for a lot more than a few tears shed.

Music: RED (Taylor's Version)

Taylor Swift released RED (Taylor's Version), which is a re-recording of her 2012 album of the same name. This version includes 10 "new" songs (From the Vault). If you want to relive 2012 almost a decade later, I suggest you immediately take a listen! Also, if you haven't watched it yet–– and want to sit in silence for an hour afterwards––go watch All Too Well: The Short Film. Taylor's video accompaniment to "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version)" stars Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf). Content Warning: male manipulator gaslights naive girl for 14 minutes and 56 seconds.

TV: The Sex Lives of College Girls

Mindy Kaling's newest HBO Max comedy-drama airs on Thursday, November 18th. The show stars Pauline Chalamet, the lesser known older sister of Timothée Chalamet. As a long time fan of Mindy Kaling and anything (or anyone) the Chalamet family produces, I will definitely be watching!

Film: Spencer

On November 5th, Spencer was released in theaters. The film is a biographical drama about the life of Diana Spencer, better known as Princess Diana. Kristen Stewart plays the titular character; her performance is currently being met with mixed reviews; the Rotten Tomatoes score is currently an 84%. As a diehard Twilight fan AND a worshiper of Princess Diana, I will be buying a ticket to see it in theaters as soon as possible.

TV: Succession

Season 3 of Succession has been taking HBO Max by storm. If you're in the mood to watch a bunch of middle aged billionaire siblings fight, you might want to start from the beginning and get lost in their world.

TV: Selling Sunset

Season 4 of Selling Sunset is back and better than ever. The reality TV show highlighting the tumultuous and competitive world of LA real estate gives viewers insight into this niche world. I finished the whole season in a day and I would advise my closest of friends to do the same.

Film: Tick, Tick...Boom!

On November 12th, Tick, Tick...Boom! premiered on Netflix, starring Andrew Garfield. Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, the lyrical genius behind Rent. The movie also pays tribute to Stephen Sondheim, who passed away on November 26th. The soundtrack is fantastic and Garfield's performance is something to remember.

TV: And Just Like That...

On December 9th, the pilot of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That... premiered on HBO Max. The show stars three of the four original cast members, Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte). I would love nothing more than to give rave reviews for the show, as a diehard fan of the original Sex and the City, but I would never lie to you like that. The writing falls flat, and I don't think anybody really needed another show about upper class middle aged white women living in New York City. In the late 90s and early 2000s, a show circulating around the sex and love lives of 4 (usually) single women was novel and exciting––never been done before. Over 20 years later however, this is no longer an exciting concept, and seeing the same characters settled down, all married with kids with the exception of Carrie, was disappointing at best.

Film: The Hating Game

On December 10th, The Hating Game, starring Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) and Austin Stowell, premiered in theaters. The film plays into the classic office co-workers who hate each other and end up falling in love trope. It may be overplayed, but I never said it would get old. If you are looking for a cheesy feel good movie to remind you that you're single this holiday season, go buy a ticket for one and treat yourself.

TV: Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is back and...worse than ever? The heavily critiqued Netflix show starring Lily Collins dropped its second season on December 22nd. Already, the internet is blowing up with problematic moments from the show, calling the writers out for their content promoting eating disorders...ironic considering Lily Collins' personal struggles with an ED as well as her performance in To the Bone. Ultimately, I can't say I'm surprised that the show hasn't been well received, as I didn't watch season 1 for any other reason than pure boredom, which I guess is what I will do with season 2.

Film: Spider-Man: No Way Home

On December 17th, Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in theaters, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, as well as the two other iconic spidermen: Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield. If you're like me and happen to have a crush on all four of these people, I guess that's already reason enough to go see it, but if you need another, the film received a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

TV: Euphoria

Finally, after a grueling two and a half years of content starvation, HBO's Euphoria is back for season 2. The critically acclaimed show stars Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferrara, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, anybody else who is hot who you can think of, and this season, Dominic Fike. From the opening scene, I could tell this season was going to be nothing short of the entertaining masterpiece that the first season was. The soundtrack is also already off to an excellent start; I cannot wait to see what season 2 brings––I have a feeling its going to be EVERYTHING.

TV: Cheer

On January 12th, the second season of Netflix's Cheer premiered. Like Euphoria, it has been 2 years since the first season was released, documenting the Navarro college cheer team and their fight to remain on top. Season 2 has already been critiqued for showing an even rougher side to the sport, from injuries to grueling coaching techniques. Additionally, one of the main personalities of season 1, Jerry Harris, faced sexual abuse allegations following the release of the first season; season 2 dedicates an entire episode to the timeline and follow up of this incident, but it definitely detracted from the support I felt for the Navarro team in 2020. Regardless, Cheer is entertaining and is worth a watch!
