SPOTLIGHT: MATILDE HECKLER

by Una McStay

Una recently sat down with Matilde Heckler, an up-and-coming Boston-based musician, to talk about her love for the violin, emo, and feminism. Matilde is making a name for herself as an acoustic/electric violinist and singer/songwriter.

Q: How did you get your start playing music?

A: I started playing the violin in third grade. In my junior year I started songwriting which morphed into emo and electric violin playing. Now, I am majoring in music business management and performance at Berklee College of Music.

Q: Who are some of your musical inspirations?

A: Some of my biggest emo inspirations are Just Friends, Retirement Party, Snail Mail, and Mom Jeans.

Q: How would you describe your music?

A: I always call my music “hot girl emo.” I say that its a little feminist, a little funky, and unlike anything you’ve ever heard tied up in a little bow with electric violin. I play my instrument in an unconventional setting and I want to take a unique approach to the genre of emo.

Q: What colors would you use to describe your music?

A: Definitely light baby pink and glitter!

Q: Tell us about your newest project!

A: My next release is called “Emo Needs More Fucking Girls.” I want to get female and non-binary people who love music involved with the release of the song. This project is bigger than just me and I want others to be able to look at what I do and be inspired to front a band. I want to tell people to just make music because you fucking can. That is the goal of this project.

Keep an eye out for Matilde’s next single on May 6th! If you want to join Matilde in changing the world with hot girl emo, check out the google doc linked here!
